This practice will be held on Tuesday, March 10th from 3:15-3:45 p.m. Following the orientation session, individual team practices will begin on Tuesday, March 31st. Practices will continue the following weeks on either Tuesdays or Thursdays depending which team your student is on. **Note: if your student has another commitment (gymnastics, hockey, etc.) that conflicts with one of these days/times but they still wish to participate, please indicate the day and time on the form sent home on Feb. 24th.

The final tournament will be on Thursday, May 14th after school. Your child will get a more detailed schedule when teams, games and practice times are finalized.

We are hoping to keep costs minimal. The registration fee of $30.00 will cover all costs incurred. This will include a t-shirt, referee costs, and medallion at the final league tournament. For more information, contact Mr. Longard at (403) 843-3751. Please fill out the bottom portion of the form and return it to the school with your child no later than Friday, February 28th. Online payment must be received by the school prior to the student participating in the open practice. Note: online payments will be applied to students’ RYCOR account once the consent form has been returned to the school. School fees must be in good standing (paid in full) in order for students to participate in optional activities such as basketball, this includes ART and STEM fees.

We are also in need of volunteers to coach the individual teams. If you would like to volunteer or know someone who does, please fill in the contact information on the form sent home.

Please note that we will try to involve every student who returns this form; however we may have to limit spaces (77) based on numbers and the amount of volunteer coaches that respond.

Recognition Rally
Time: 2:10 pm - 3:00 pm

Each month RES will be focusing on  Character Education Program, “Seven Sacred Teachings.” This is part of the provincial mandate to begin including more FNMI content into AB Education.

The Seven Sacred Teachings are the traits of:   Respect, Love, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility & Truth.

The traditional concepts of respect and sharing that form the foundation of the Aboriginal way of life are built around the seven natural laws, or sacred teachings. Each teaching honors one of the basic virtues in intrinsic to a full and healthy life.

Each law is embodied by an animal to underscore the point that all actions and decisions made by man are manifest on a physical plain. The animal world taught man how to live close to the earth, and the connection that has been established between the animal world and that of man has instilled a respect for all life in those who follow the traditional Aboriginal way.

RESPECT—BUFFALO

LOVE/CARING—EAGLE

COURAGE—BEAR

HONESTY—SABE

WISDOM—BEAVER

Green Shirt Day 2020

Green Shirt Day, in honour of the Logan Boulet Effect, in support of organ donor awareness/registration across Canada.

On April 6, 2018, Canadians were heartbroken to hear the news of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Of the 29 passengers, sixteen lost their lives and thirteen will all bear physical and emotional scars for life.

On April 7, 2018, Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries. His parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on. They did so because Logan told his parents he was registering as an organ donor and that he was inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt. Ric passed on June 27th, 2017 and was also an organ donor and saved 6 lives.

What happened following this selfless act is nothing less than miraculous and became known across Canada as the “Logan Boulet Effect”.

As news spread of the organ donation by this young hockey player, over 100,000 people registered to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed. To date, this is the largest number of Canadians registering to become organ donors in Canadian History due to one event – one person.

Green Shirt Day was created to honour, remember, and recognize all the victims and families of that fatal crash and to continue Logan’s legacy by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors.

The Logan Boulet Effect is leaving a lasting impression on Canadians. Since 2018, hundreds of thousands have taken the important step of talking with their families about their wish to become an organ and tissue donor, and many are confirming that decision by registering their intent to donate through their provincial organ donor registration system. While in 2018 we estimated 150,000 Canadians registered in the weeks following the Humboldt crash, Green Shirt Day 2019 has inspired another hundred thousand or more to take action.

Logan’s legacy reminds us how important it is for Canadians to talk with their family about their organ donation wishes. It’s suggested that for every person who registers their intent to donate, they speak with an average of 4 others about organ donation. That means that 100,000 new registrants equals approximately 400,000 conversations.

Keep the conversation going … it’s so important.

In Canada, almost 90% of Canadians say they support organ donation, but only 23% have actually registered their intent to donate. Though donation rates have improved over the last ten years, there is more to be done as approximately 250 Canadians die annually waiting for an organ transplant.

On April 7, 2020 WEAR GREEN to remember the Humboldt Bus Tragedy and in honour of the Logan Boulet Effect. Let’s continue to inspire one another by registering as donors, and telling our families.
